craftyhunnypie
Hiya. Bought a hardy Fuschia at a tabe top sale today. £1.50 for a 3 year old plant. So can I stick it straight in the ground & are they quick growing? Presume it will be a bit twiggy over Winter then come back lovely next year? I'm whipping out some small dead conifers & making a small border that will also become like a sceen / hedge eventually. Emma.x
Old Speckled Hen
Yes it can go in now. Put a little bonemeal in the hole and fork it in then a liberal amount of compost. Plant so that the soil level is a few inches above the level in the pot. This will protect the roots and encourage the branches below ground level to make new shoots. I have a Hawkshead planted from a pot three years ago that is now about a metre high and across. Lovely single pale flowers this time of year....I hate blousy double/triple flowers
Guest
If you have had conifers there it will be dry and hungry soil. So get in plenty of compost, muck or whatever before you start planting. Fuschias are hardy once they get going - I have lots of them!
Ain't Nobody Here
I put a new fuschia in last year which survived the horrendous winter and this year is looking fab, with hundreds of flowers. It's quite short still but there's been loads of growth .
chickencam
They die down in the winter but sprout from the bottom in the spring.
