lillybettybabs
Ok, well i think I would like to have a go at showing. I have read somewhere that you need to ring show birds at 8wks with the correct colour band. Can anyone shed so light on this? .
laurmurf
the Poultry Club ringing scheme is voluntary, not required for showing.
Redwing
As Laurie says, the ringing scheme is not compulsary Here is how it works though Each year the rings are a different colour, last year's was black, this year is yellow The rings are measured in mm and a list of the sizes for males and females of each breed is on the Poultry Club Great Britain site You order the rings through them, each ring has numbers and letters on it, these mean various things but there is a 3 or 4 digit number that will be unique and the PCGB keep a note of who has been allocated what number Theoretically a bird could be traced back to its breeder but this isnt really done. When you buy a ringed bird you can send transfer paperwork off to the PCGB but in reality this isnt really done either! Some poultry fanciers are suspicious if the scheme and many wont take part I use the rings as and when I remember to get the chick at the right point, if the feet are too small the ring falls off, if too big you cant get the ring on. I like them as you can keep track of birds better if they all look the same! If you are lucky enough to get to champions row at the National there is a cash prize if your bird is leg rung Really there are no massive benefits but if buying breeding birds if they are leg rung you'll know their aprox age What you cannot do is show a bird that has a leg ring thats not a PCGB one If you want to show then joining the PCGB is a good start as is joining the breed club of your chosen breed I'd thoroughly recommend having a go at showing, its great fun
