dixie chick
Wonder if any of you might be able to suggest a possible explanation for this? This morning I looked into the hen house to see a puddle of fresh blood - about a tablespoon full - on the tray under the roosting bars. All ten chooks look fine - none have blood on them as far as I can see ..... am really worried though

sparkysmum
Blood passed in poo or just blood could be a sign of coccidia - a parasitic condition. Hens don't necessarily look ill to be carrying the parasite however by the time they are passing blood it's maybe a sign they need treatment. I would be inclined to take a sample to your local vets & they will send it for analysis. Treatment is quite harsh on them so I wouldn't be inclined to treat without a proper diagnosis. Good luck. dixie chick
Thanks for that advice Alli - hope its not that...... there was no blood this morning. When you say 'take a sample' what do you mean? A sample of poo? Problem now is that I have cleared up the evidence, and have no idea from which hen the blood came .... so a bit difficult - cant really take a labelled poo sample from all ten hens! The blood appeared on their last day of their Flubenvet treatment - wonder if that is significant?
sparkysmum
Hi dixie chick, great that there was no more blood this morning For the future, if you need to take a poo sample just pop it into a clean container & label it. The vets will send it to the lab for testing. If you are testing for coccidia you don't have to know which hen it came from as you would be treating the whole flock, if the results came back positive. Hopefully all will be well though.
