Hi,

1 of our 3 hens is poorly. Yesterday there was yellow/greenish runny poo around coop and garden. Wasn't sure who was responsible as they all seemed there usual spritely selves. Started worming regime, but by late afternoon Mavis was looking like the patient. She was quiet, and a bit hunched with a bit of a mucky bum.

Today she is not herself at all. Ate a bit this morning, but seems to have spent most of the day hunched under various hedges.

We only got them in August when they were POL. Had been getting 3 eggs a day apart from occasioanl 2/day. Did have a shell-less egg a few days ago if thats related.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

The shelless egg could be related. She may be brewing another.

 

In the meantime, I'd keep them on a very basic diet, ie pellets and water, with maybe some bokashi bran added to see if that helps with the sloppy poo.

So pleased to say that Mavis is now back to her usual self, and all have now had their worming regime.

The diarrhoea cleared after a few days and she gradually perked up and is now a normal happy chicken apart from the fact that she has not laid since. Is this normal or should I be worried? The coop had loads of feathers in it this morning so I presume one of them is starting to moult, but I'm not sure yet which one.

Any advice hugely apperciated.

The dire rear may have been caused by a heavy worm load, so regular quarterly worming with Flubenvet would be a good idea.

 

If they are staring to moult, then the addition of a good poultry tonic in their water will help give them the nutrients they need to grow new feathers.
