clucker1
My 4 Omlet girls are 18 months now, one has definitely gone through the moult thing. Egg production is down to about 1 a day (was 4 a day) and this has been since September. Is this because of the moult or their age? Thank you for your pearls of wisdom. They are on layers pellets with oyster shell mixed in and free range for about an hour max a day. I also get a softie most days. Fortunately, my 2 new girls are laying ok. Clairey
Hi! I have a similar issue but our girls are 2 and a half. When they moulted last year, things went back to normal although as the days shorten at this time of year, the egg supply was not at its best. Hope this helps in reassuring you. I would personally like to know what to expect after the 2nd moult - how many eggs can I expect from a 3 year-old hen? I guess things will never be what they were but could anyone give me a few figures about their girls' production at a similar age? Thanks a lot Claire Bianca, Rose and Alice (looking very sad and naked at the moment) (we need the smilie for a naked hen on here! ) AND Bonbon and Clarabelle
clucker1
That is so very helpful, thank you for your help. Today I topped up their food and gave extra oyster shell....as how much do you give them? There is no directions on my packaging and I also gave them some more poultry spice. They have been not laying properly for about a couple of months. They were wormed earlier in the year too. Hopefully the extra oyster shell might work?? Clairey
Hi there Re. shells quantity, I make sure I give them enough to be able to see enough in amongst their pellets. I have also given mine a little marmite on bread and poultry spice to help them. They also love dried mealworms, which is good for extra protein - feather production requires protein. Also, I find that mine go inside the Eglu during the day (which is SO unusual) as I think they're cold due to their lack of feathers and the cold weather coming now, so I give them a handful of mixed grains last thing in the afternoon to help keep them warmer at night. Hope all this helps.
