memphisto
Good Morning, Wonder if anyone can advise please? Penny, our black rock, over the last few days has become very boisterous and started bullying the other chickens, me, the OH and my little boy! If you walk past her, she'll peck you, I was changing the feeders and drinkers and she kept pecking at my arm and spreading her wings at me and kind of screeching at me every so often. Thought it was a one off but when I was cleaning the coop, I noticed if one of the others walked past her, she'd chase and peck them. Dilys initially started standing up to her but Penny pecked her, so she backed down and now, even if they look at her in the wrong way she's after them. Today she even picked on the neighbours cat...the cat sits on the coop but its quite elderly and we can see it from the house so we're not overly concerned the cat posing a threat, but Penny flew up to the top of the coop, pecked the cat then chased it all the way down the garden, then came back looking ever so pleased with herself. We've now put her in the pen on her own because when we gave the girls porridge this morning, she went all out attacking them. Have noticed her comb and wattles have got larger and redder, I wondered if it were a case of it being shes maturing faster than the others and kind of like in a big sister way, she gets annoyed with the 'immature' ones. She's 25 weeks (ish) now. We have put anti peck on the others which has not detered her, so I'm at a loss of what to do, any advice is appreciated xx
Ain't Nobody Here
I'm not an expert but from memory, I think you need to assert yourself over her. Pick her up whenever you can and be quite firm when she misbehaves. I'd even carry her about with you whenever you can - just so she knows you're the boss . Could you give her a squirt with a water pistol whenever she attacks? I suppose she may stop when the others catch her up in maturity. Is she laying yet? If not, perhaps she'll settle down when she starts.
