chestnutmare Posted October 17, 2011 Share Posted October 17, 2011 Well, what a surprise I had when I just locked the chickens in and found another egg in the nesting box. But I had three eggs today - what?! Partly soft and pale shell but I could see it was Belle's. She laid early this morning - it had a nice hard shell but a pale ring on it. What's going on Belle?! Does anyone here know? I'm blaming their new ladder. They now have to climb to get to their Eglu ( is on a high table now). Last night I had to put them all 3 of them to bed, in spite of Snowy knowing where to go to lay (?!). Weird though! I'll give them some milk and cheese tomorrow so if Belle does it again I might at least get two eggs both with hard shells. PeckyBeak Posted October 20, 2011 Share Posted October 20, 2011 Hi Chestnutmare, This has happened a few times with my lot, it has usually been when the chook is out of sync. with her laying, one egg may be soft and the other normal, or I have had two quite normal ones laid by one girlie in the space of a few hours. It was after her moult and she was just not back to normal laying pattern. Don't think that giving milk or cheese would be a good idea, as too much fat content for chickens. Mine get get layers pellets, mixed corn, grit and greens that's it. That's interesting to know about your hen but I haven't noticed a big moult. Anyway, she's back to normal now. All shells solid.
