Pro - Does anyone else's nest boxes get soaked in rain?

I'm reading on here how chickens will knacker your garden. Well, add in two football mad sons and their friends and my previously OK lawn is now a mud-bath. Glastonbury has nothing on this.

 

I normally just sprinkle grass seed where they've been playing - even though it is the 'wrong' time of year. Is there any point now that I've got chickens? Will they just eat it up? I'm sure I could keep them in their run all day but I don't really want to do that.

I net off the area for about 6-8 weeks.

I seeded where a trampoline used to be. I got a couple of boxes of bog standard seed from Poundland and netted the area off for a few weeks. The fat wood pigeons in my garden needed keeping off as much as the chickens

A while ago on the forum I read of some sort of mesh that you can put down and let the grass grow through that had been used with some success by a couple of omleteers - I can't find it - anyone else spot the links?
