Luvachicken
I know it's not that cold yet, but I was just thinking that if I put the poultry tonic in the water during the day, and it goes below freezing in that time, is it ok to keep that sort of water heated ? I tend to make a litre bottle a day when I do do it, and don't always leave the water in there overnight, but I just wondered if heating the water makes any difference to it's content. Also, what's the most amount of water I can make before it's not "fresh" or is it best to just make fresh every day ?
squiffs
my chickens hate fresh water! they like it as yucky as possible I leave their water out overnight and only change it when it needs it, though as it gets colder I'll bring it in to stop it freezing. I think lots of people keep their water a bit heated in the colder months, and that generally coincides with a moult so I'm sure some have heated water with tonic in it too
Luvachicken
Yeah, it has got cold and everyone keeps telling me what a bad Winter we are going to have
squiffs
how will you be heating the water, out of interest? I'm on the look out for some good tips, as I'm out nearly 12 hours a day Monday to Friday, so I won't be able to switch out the water or top it up with warm stuff! Luvachicken
We've got one of those plastic blue heater things that plugs in and you put the water container on top. It was a bit expensive and we had to buy a galvanised water holder but it was worth the money, knowing the water didn't freeze during the day - unlike my poor rabbits water...if only rabbits didn't chew .. squiffs
ah yes I know the sort! I've nowhere to plug one in but definitely worth the investment I think if you do! I think your water should be fine, as long as the heater isn't so warm it's starting to evaporate, that's when the concentration will alter. Luvachicken
Hubby connected ours to a little shed that controls the pump for my little pond, the socket part is in one of those water proof thing with a cover so during the summer they can't peck at it and electrocute themselves.
