Lost one of my girls this afternoon while she was out free ranging. Feel terribly negligent because I'd noticed a fox in the garden two mornings ago, really the first time in over a year. So two questions. Now that a fox has tasted blood will it remember and return to the scene of the crime? Will the other three who were also out in the garden and must have seen the attack be in any way affected by it?

So sorry to hear about your loss. Good news that it was "only" one hen though, as foxes have a tendency to kill everything (not because they have a kill lust, but they take away what they can and then come back for the rest later).

 

Foxy will be back, so you'll need to provide extra prtection for your Girls, or keep them confined to their fox-proof run.

I'm inclined to go on the offensive and attack the fox rather than defend my girls, but i don't suppose the law is on my side. Would a squeegy bottle of bleach be considered unlawful?

I lost one of my girls to a fox 4 years ago. The fox WILL be back, no two ways about it.

 

I built a large walk in run for my girls after the attack and they only ever come out to free range when I am in the garden to supervise them. I just daren't risk it.

Sorry to hear that you have lost one of your girls but, yes, a squeegee bottle of bleach would be considered unlawful - and anyway would not be effective in dealing with the problem.

 

As the others have said, the fox will be back so you need to beef up your defences and keep your girls in their run unless you are with them. If you want to go on the offensive, an electric fence is the way to do it.

Sorry for your loss - squeegee bleach will only be a short term (illegal) solution, if you kill one fox another will move in on its territory and replace it. Defence is the only option.

Not just illegal, but inhumane. The fox is only doing whats natural. Supervise your animals properly next time, and consider this a learning opportunity. I did when one of my was taken after 5 minutes leaving them alone.
