Minty_76
Hello My Australorp bantam is having her first moult and she looks so tatty! I noticed a few days ago one of her feet looked a bit swollen and she holding it up a bit. From what I can gather she may well have scaly leg as the scales are poking upwards on her ankle. I have applied a bit of sudocreme for the past few days and applied some Johnsons scaly lotion to it today although I have a bit of trouble rubbing it in as she isn't used to being handled. I am trying not to stress her out to much as she is moulting but how long do you think I should apply the cream for and how long does it usually take to clear up? Maybe she got the mites as she is a little fragile at the moment. I disinfected the Eglu yesterday so hopefully it won't get any worse. hennyjenny
Hi, I applied sudocreme for 5 days and that did the trick but I think you will notice the difference and know when to stop. best wishes HJ
HH HENS
Hi Minty, I have a cream legbar that had scaly leg mite its really painful for them, I found nettex scaly leg mite spray good you repeat every 5 days to begin with. If it is persistent then ivermecin drops prescribed by the vet cleared it up effectively. I now routinely spray all my birds legs every four weeks as a preventative, as I found that once the legbar got infected she seemed to pick them up again. If your hen is difficult to handle then do it first thing in the morning or after she has gone to bed, you can just lift her out of the hen house. The good thing about the spray is that it is all over and done with very quickly. Redwing
When a chook moults it also moults its leg scales, they lift away as new ones grow in underneath - these are particularly visible where the foor meets the leg so I'd say its possibly just that Sudecreme wont do any harm though
