ElvisFan
Hmmm something is going on, over the last 3 weeks or so I have found 3 or 4 eggs that have been smashed in the eglu sometimes with shell and sometines without, each time I have cleared up what looks like almost a whole egg, could it be that one of the girls is just treading on them by accient ? I have read that if chicks start to eat eggs that they will continiously do this and its really hard to stop, thing is they have been laying everyday and I've only lost 3 or 4 eggs so are they eating them ??? Can anyone throw any light on this ?
Egluntyne
Sounds like you have got an egg eater I'm afraid. It is a difficult habit to break. You can try putting pot eggs in the nest, or eggs filled with mustard to try to put them off. I had a problem with this a year or so ago, and I bought rollaway nest boxes to put in my WIR. It did the trick.
lindafw
You could well have an egg eater...see above post for advice but also check the thickness of your broken shells...I have one buff orpington large fowl who lays thin shelled eggs regularly and thus we get broken eggs
ElvisFan
Thanks for the advice guys, we have been away recently and the neighbour looking after the chicks didn't top up the grit and oyster shell mix so I am hoping they might be thin shells, I've been giving them extra oyster shell and I'll keep an eye on them an then maybe try the mustard trick as she's not eating them every day here's hoping. doctors girls
i had the same problem as lindafw as one of my sussex was laying thinly shelled eggs and they had access to mixed grit but it only lasted only a couple of weeks and i have noticed her egg shell is a lot thicker now
