gitwit
Morning, We have 4 hens. One in egg retirement (she's 6 in the spring - not bad for a hybrid!), two not currently laying (having just completed extensive moults), and one taking up the slack for the whole team. I just collected the egg this morning and in addition so some normal droppings I noticed a pale oval lump about the size of a quail's egg. On picking it up (with gloves - bleurgh) I noticed it felt very dense, like a rubber bouncy ball. I was able to break it open and it had the grainy texture of chicken meat. Or maybe halloumi cheese. That's my powers of description exhausted now - does anyone have any ideas what this thing may be? Droppings, egg matter, halloumi cheese(unlikely)? Thanks Iain
Ain't Nobody Here
It's a lash . Generally nothing to worry about but rather revolting . "info here*
gitwit
That's the fella! Thanks! Might it herald the return of laying from one of our recent moulters?
Elaine-chick
Hi Gitwit ......... I've had a few of these in the last few months and they are strange things aren't they. When I've read up on "lash" I was led to believe that it marked the end of the hen in question's laying eggs - like a "henopause" !! This seemed to make sense as my 2 older ex-bat girls stopped laying about 6 months ago.
sandyhas3chucks
I have lost too many ex bats due to these meat lumps.. and too many trips to the vet as they get stuck in the oviduct, to feel that they are anything but something to worry about... I stop mine laying now at the first meat lump... That said one girl has laid as you describe AND at this precise moment in time is laying proper eggs. sadly not my other experience at all. Sammiboo
I had my first experience of a lash, the girl that i thought it belonged to has only been laying since april so i hope its not her. i have 2 ex batts and 2 ex FRers so with the age it maybe one of those.
