Lacing (double & triple) in Barnevelders - help!

Recommended Posts

Happy New Year Everyone.

I have just purchased two beautiful Barnevelder pullets, and the breeder said that one is double laced, the other triple.

Now I've looked at their feathers, and I can't tell the difference. Can anyone explain which bit I should be looking at?

I realise that triple lacing isn't the breed standard in Barnevelders, but I am not bothered about that, they are only for pets. I've attached a pic, which I hope may show the detail, but if anyone can explain in laymans terms, I'd be very grateful :D

The one on the left is apparently the triple laced one (Brandy)

Aww thank you. They are a bit bedraggled as it's not stopped raining since we got them, but they are so sweet, a bit shy, but our boisterous Warrens are quit bossy with them still. I have a feeling they will be big birds indeed, they are massive!

Double lacing is where there are two distinct laced lines on the feather and a clear background. Triple lacing is where there is a stripe down the middle too so the lighter background in the centre of the feather is broken (does that make sense)

Its a fault as you say but makes for a very attractively marked pet bird :D
