egg covered in white

Recommended Posts

One of my chooks has laid an egg today and its all covered in a sort of thin white bumpy layer. I guess it would have wiped off when it was first laid??? but as it's sat in the coop all day it's now a thick layer that won't rub off.

Is it safe to eat? And what is it?

Thanks

Sometimes when they are under stress ie first coming into lay or going out of lay, or frightened by something or a change of feed or accommodation, they can deposit and extra layer of calcium on the outside of the egg shell giving it a whitish tinge. Obviously this is just a guess without being able to see or handle the egg, but it does happen quite often.
