mellymadhair
my cockeral Stuart has been infested badly (and for some time i think) with Red Mites, I am treating hime quite successfully with Smite powder. I dont know any of his history or age due to him being a rehomed with me, he is a Sussex breed. He has started to be wobberlt almost drunk like and has fallen over, obviosly I am very concerned!, I have had him and 3 x battery girls for three weeks, he hasnt got signs of injury. I am going to worm him tommorow as the girls have been done. Is it anaemia? if so how do i help him best?? He is eating and drinking well. Ideas please, many thanks. love mel Stuart phylis, peggy, stacie, hetty
superkitty
I don't have a lot of experience so hopefully someone who knows a bit more will be along soon. But when one of my girls had mites recently I was advised to give her protein-rich foods to help build her up. She was mainlining sunflower seeds and live mealworms . Also nutridrops every day, on top of her regular food. It did seem to help, alongside the mite treatment. Good luck!
Mum
How worrying for you!! ((hugs)) Ok, presumably you don't wish to take him to the vets at this stage? It's a positive sign that he is eating and drinking well. If protein rich food is the order of the day, then do consider boiling a couple of eggs and then mashing them up (with shell!) and feeding that to him. Keep up with the Smite, those red mites can take a bit to get rid of. If its anaemia, I'm guessing (and only guessing!) that his comb colour would have paled; has it? Do you add apple cider vinegar to their water as a supplement? Rooting for Stuart that he pulls through!
Egluntyne
If he is falling over, it might be worth considering Marek's, in which case it would be worth seeking the advice of a vet. Unfortunately home remedies wouldn't be of any use, if this were the case.
mellymadhair
cheers for the information! I hae been giving the ex bats and him the applecider vinegar and they have had a mix of meal worms (dead) as treats. I have been using the vinegar twice a week as thats whats on the bottle. His comb and wattles are bright red as they should be, so maybe vets it is to be on the safe side xxx
