Artificial Grass?

Recommended Posts

We are planning a redesign of our garden this summer. We moved into our house nearly 3 years ago, and as the house was a new build, we had a blank canvas to work with. In that time we have put some turf down, built a couple of raised beds and made a FR pen for the chickens. The grass, however is looking rubbish and we are wondering about replacing it with artificial grass when we redesign the garden.

The problem is several-fold: firstly, the grass gets walked on a lot to go back and forth to the hen pen which has really worn it, also the ground underneath is heavy clay mixed with a load of rubbish kindly left behind by the builders with very little by way of decent top soil, so the grass has sort of sunk down. It also dies back in summer because the clay dries out and becomes waterlogged in winter as the clay holds the water. Finally, since getting the dog we now have an attractive selection of burn marks on the lawn. As we don't have a huge lawn, we wondered about trying artificial grass to try and help eliminate the problems mentioned above. Does anyone have any experience of using it? Does it look realistic? How easy is it to maintain? What about having a dog and artificial lawn (she's not a digger). Anything else I should be aware of or know about?
