jetriley52
Hi, I am new to the site but have had chickens and ducks for a few years. I am thinking of buying a Cube for my six hens, they are Buff Orpington, Cuckoo Maran, Faverolles, Bluebell, Ancona and wonder if the big hens will fit through the hole to the nesting box. I also have a Golden Pheasant male and one female. I would appreciate any comments you may have on this topic. Many thanks June
NannyOgg
Hi June, and welcome to the Forum My buff Orp, Esme, fits through with no problem, as you can see, she's not the smallest of girls! Hope that helps I love my Cube, so do my girls (and the chooks seem to like it too )
jetriley52
Hi thank you so much for the lovely pics. I am now convinced that the cube is for the girls. Do you use the cardboard bedding, I was thinking of changing to that too.
NannyOgg
I use Aubiose and find it excellent, the absorbency really makes poo picking a much easier job! I also put a layer of this in the dropping trays, I find that it makes cleaning out that little bit easier too
jetriley52
I ordered an orange cube on Tuesday so it should arrive anytime, cant wait to see what the girls think of it. I am also going to try the cardboard bedding. I currently use straw from the farm but I think it is too big for my delecate girls. I think it will be easier too to manage. My Golden Pheasants don't share the chicken enclosure as they have their own and dont need anything to sleep in they just roost. The are very sweet, just as pets nothing else. If the hen lays eggs then that will be a bonus, little chicks. June

NannyOgg
Excellent! I remember I got my Cube without hubby knowing (an amazing Freecycle find!!), and when I brought it home, he told me I was out of order for taking something we would never use, I should have let somebody take it who would use it, as there was NO WAY we were getting chickens. The next day when he was at work, I scrubbed and jet washed the whole thing, and put it together before he got home from work...he wasn't impressed, but eventually agreed to us having 2 chickens. So I got 6!! Now he has agreed we need a walk in run, and he secretly loves them just as much as I do So anyway, the point of my story is simply that it is certainly doable for one woman to assemble the cube single handedly...so why wait? Get out there and BUILD THAT CUBE!!!!!
jetriley52
You sound just like me. Get him to agree to two and get 6. I got him to agree to chooks and ended up with 24 and three different coops, 9 ducks. Had them for a while but my son was seriously ill in Eastbourne and we live in Yorkshire so had to downsize as it was a lot for my hubby to do when I was away. We just have the six cherubs and the two pheasants. I think I will get to more golden pheasant females, but dont tell him. I would normally do it myself, but its nice to think I can't do without him. That's a man thing ladies.!!!!!!!!!
