Extremely sick quail (includes pics) PLEASE HELP

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, this is my quail Hilda.

A few weeks ago I noticed that a couple of quails seem lethargic and kept shutting their eyes, their eyes seemed a bit pink and had a lot of sleepy dust on them. This passed really quickly and the quails seemed fine within a few days, but I cleaned everything thoughouly after.

Suddenly I got back home one evening to find one quail very ill, she was tilting her head to one side, had watery green diarrhoea and seemed unable to stand and her head was on one side. Her breathing was forced and I didn't think she would make it, she seemed completely unaware of anything around her and almost paralysed. Unfortunately I was going on to work a night shift so I separated her from the others and brought her inside where it was warmer. I came back from work to find her completely normal and back to her usual self. I kept her apart from the others for a few days just to be safe and disinfected absolutely everything.

About a week later the area under her eye became swollen. After about 2 days the swelling became so bad she seemed unable to close her eyelid, with the swollen flesh protruding out. I took her to the vet who seemed completely baffled, he prescribed some anti inflammatory tablets for the pain, cleaning with saline solution and a course of antibiotics for any secondary infections. He seemed fairly baffled though and has never treated a quail before.

She is having treatment but now seems worse. The swollen flesh is now so swollen that it covers the entire eye on one side. She scratched the flesh protruding from the eyelid and it bled,(the dark bit you see in one picture isn't her eye it's the scab on the swollen flesh) she also has her other eye tighly shut. I went back to the bed who has given me more anti-inflammatories. I have no idea what it is or what to do PLEASE PLEASE HELP.

Here are the pics, don't look if you have a weak stomach though.

As previously said,I think it looks like Mycoplasma too. I have had this in my flock of Bantams and it requires a lot of TLC to bring it under control. Keep her seperated and I would go back to the vet for a course of the right antibiotics usually baytril. There are lots of post on here about Mycoplasma and I know I had some fab advice from some experienced chicken keepers on this forum. The bird will remain a carrier and you may find it rears its ugly head again from time to time but with the right care it can be controlled. I usually dose mine with some Nutri drops to help while they are not eating much and add some avian electrolytes to their water and give them their favourite treats to tempt them to eat. I also add lifeguard to the water of the whole flock to try and prevent further outbreaks and keep them in good health. Good luck and I hope your quail improves soon
