Is it necessary to wash new fabric before sewing?

 

I am a newbie to a sewing machine and have just bought my first pattern and fabric to make myself an apron. The instructions say to wash the fabric first.

I never wash it first. I think the theory is that the colour will run or the fabric shrink.

Thanks Plum. I don't think I will bother to wash the fabric first. Now do I iron the pattern before starting to cut it out

 

I have found a lady who is going to teach me to sew, so hopefully I will not be asking lots of questions here

Never heard of that one. Next you'll be tacking things together. Actually I've not made clothes since I was at school a looong time ago.
