kaza46 Posted April 30, 2012 Share Posted April 30, 2012 I have moved my Broody (24hrs only) with the eggs into a smaller hutch as she was where the others lay their eggs. When i went to move her she puffed up etc like a broody would, then we moved her and the eggs over to the new home. She got out had some food and water but didn't go back into the eggs. I have now got her back in and baracaded her in in the hope she will sit again. Did i move her too soon? Is she not completely broody (if thats poss)? Is she over it or can she get her broody feelings back? Is it not the easy to switch it off so she will be fine? She is 10mths old and i wasnt' sure if she knew what the heck she had to do. Redwing Posted April 30, 2012 Share Posted April 30, 2012 I dont think you moved her too soon personally, its possible that she wasnt fully committed to the cause as if properly broody they go in to a trace like state so usually sit back on the eggs very quickly. Perhaps there was too much too look at in her new home and she got distracted Shutting her in is a good idea, if she doesnt settle in the next day or so then I wouldnt press it further If she has stopped being broody then she will be fine and just go back to regular life Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
kaza46 Posted April 30, 2012 Author Share Posted April 30, 2012 Thanks for info. I have just taken some fertilized eggs up to her and put near her and she went to go for me. This is very much out of character as she was hand reared so i am sure her broodiness is still there. I have left the stakes across to keep her in but was thinking of removing them later. I need to kick her off tomorrow so i can take the other infertile eggs out so hopefully she will go back as normal otherwise i will do the same thing. She is young and its her first time, maybe she isn't that smart yet when it comes to this sort of thing lol. Will keep ya updated. Chook n Boo Mum Posted April 30, 2012 Share Posted April 30, 2012 Think her problem may be one of not being sure of where she is as you moved her to an unfamiliar hutch....if she's settled on the eggs, then she'll be happy enough to go back to them tomorrow after her comfort break....I have a broody who even 2 weeks into her confinement would take herself to a different house if her own front door was still closed, same position, just next door & obviously different babies to be, and upstairs rather than the ground floor accommodation she's used too ...not the brightest these chooks are they Good luck! kaza46 Posted May 1, 2012 Author Share Posted May 1, 2012 Day 3 of Mrs Broody story - She sayed on her eggs no problems, let out for a feed to day (had to kick her off nest), left her to it and she went back at her own free will.
