Chickens + gardening 'chemicals'

Recommended Posts

Any thoughts/suggestions on safe [or unsafe!] garden products as far as my new chooks are concerned, please?

Is it safe to assume that organic products are automatically OK?

We'd like to find something to feed out grass, and do away with moss, that is chicken-safe.

We used to use a fab organic product that is chicken-manure based, but very concentrated, called 6X to keep the grass green, you sprinkle it on and hope for rain :-)

The chickens seem not to want to eat ants but I'm guessing that in future it's going to be the kettle of boiling water down any nests, rather than ant-powder....

I am a keen home composter and am already adding the poo and the straw to my bins :D I use fish/bone/blood meal on my veggie raised beds, which are netted to keep the cat and the chickens off them.

Re the moss, you can use malt / white vinegar in a spray bottle to kill it and then just rake it all up... I dare say that apple cider vinegar would probably do the same! You're meant to leave it on for 10 minutes, give it a good rake and then hose down the whole lawn, if you leave it on too long then it will take out the grass too  I did this with our ridiculously mossy lawn, it took a couple of goes as it's quite thick but it certainly did the trick and the chooks have helped to get the last bits out!

Give it a google, there's lots of good ideas :D
