mimi5
Hi All! So yesterday was day 21 here!! We now have 2 cute fluffy chcicks!!!! But mum is still glued to the 4 other eggs. I quick check this morning and no more have pipped . This evening sometime will be 48 hrs for the first chick. Do I need to worry about these little ones getting water and food??? Will any more eggs hatch??? When should I give up on the other eggs and should I remove them?? Can you tell it's my first time hatching??? Back to work tomorrow......going to be stressed out till I get home!!! Thanks
sjp
I've had hatches spread out over 3 days so I'd give them till about Tuesday just keep her on lockdown and try not to disturb her to much otherwise she will abbandon the other eggs II put the feeder(with chick crumb) and drinker in the coop so she and the chicks have some food and water you might find that by morning that she's given up on the rest anyway
Isabel
I'm pretty much where you are Mimi! Our first chick will be 24 hrs old this afternoon. Two more hatched overnight and one is currently on it's way out. That leaves 6 eggs still unhatched. Thanks for the advice SJP - I'll do the same and leave her on lockdown til Tuesday which will also give me a chance to order some tarp so as I can rig up some shelter. It's blowing a gale and about to lash here. Hope you get sone more Mimi!!
Redwing
It's a risk... Personally I would lift her off for food and drink and hope she returns to the eggs - if you place the food and drink within a few steps and block access to distractions such as the outside world I would imagine she would settle back on the eggs but it's not guaranteed You could always place small dishes of food and water where she can reach them from where she is
mimi5
Thanks everyone for your replies! I have put food and water within reach and have seen both babies inside the food dishes They do seem to be becoming more adventurious!! But mum did a poo in the nest!!! ( yuk but she has done this all the way through!!!! So scooped her off and cleaned up! Saw the eggs and still no pipping) Think maybe my 2 are going to be it. But I'm still chuffed as the are both from my hens and Monty my georgous cockerel!!! Especially as I worried with all the poo that were coated in and me wipping it off over the 21 days, that I'd get none!!! But sad not 1 out of the 2 auracana eggs have hatched One more quick question. The eggs are from my pekins. Chick no1 is a gold partridge looking colour (and it came from an egg from my gold partridge hen!) but no2 is yellow. Does anyone know what colour this will be as an adult?? Many thanks an best wishes to you Isabel with the rest of your hatch too......nerve wracking isn't it!!!!! Have a cute photo, will get no1 son computer ace to help me post it later! Redwing
It could be various colours as an adult - what colour are the parents?

mimi5
Redwing, Dad is a millifleur pekin and mum I think is a sliver partridge( I can't be 100% sure if it's not her then it was another millifleur I have) I asked a friend who also keeps pekins and he said it's possibly a throw back from both parents and might be white?? What do you think? Thanks
Redwing
It could be white he is correct If both parents are Millefleur then it will also be millefleur and those hatch yellow If the parents are as you suspect then the online chicken genetics calculator (hours of fun...) predicts a buff columbian type patterning and that would also hatch yellow So in short - you wont know for a while
