auntielizzie
I have been feeding the girls Garvo growers mash in the hope that Bessie would start laying again (as advised by Frank at Moggerhanger). Although initially she did lay maybe one or two eggs a week, she has now not laid for about the last three weeks. Betty has continued laying every day throughout. I went to get some more feed last week. I thought I would switch them on to Garvo layers mash. Unfortunately they did not have any Garvo, so I bought Organic Feed Company organic layers meal crumble. This looks just like ground up normal layers pellets. Needless to say, the girls are on hunger strike now! They are not happy. Whereas the Garvo growers was full of all sorts of interesting bits and peices, this new layers meal looks very plain. Is this what layers mash normally looks like? Previous to this I was always using pellets and they really seemed to like the Garvo version. Should I switch them back to pellets or should I go back and see if they have some Garvo layers mash in stock? Or should I just be hard and leave them with the organic stuff? I have also run out of mealworms at the moment, so I think they are doubly unhappy with me
Redwing
I would leave them to it, they won't starve although they may waste a lot rooting through it Garvo mash is unlike any other I have seen. Most brands are powdery but some aren't so bad but none are as chunky as garvo. Odd that the recommendation would be to switch to growers mash in absence of eggs I would have thought layers or breeders mash would be better
Salop Chuck
Try Farmgate Super Omega Mash - £7.64 for a 15 kg bag. It has lots of interesting bits in it and my hens took to it straight away.
