emmat
Hi all My ex-batt who is about 4yrs is getting repeat sour crop, I've just read the sticky on it so will get some probiotic today and some apple cider vinegar too. She gets a very purple comb with it too... Should I be worried about her? We are about to go away for 10 days and I don't want to leave her ill... Egghead68
4 years is a fantastic age for an ex-batt! Nystatin is good for sour crop, if it is fungal, but you have to get it on prescription. Would your chicken-sitter be able to administer it?
emmat
Thanks! Yes I am sure she would - she's a professional pet sitter thats looked after various chooks of ours over the years. I thought 4 was quite young for an ex-batt - no wonder the rest of the gang have passed on! She's Stil not good today, very purple dry comb and I just had to tip her up and pour her out again Will I get that prescription stuff from a vet? xx
Uma
Yes you get it from a vet but you'd have to ask for it by name as its not the first one they go for but it is the best ofr treating if fungal. It might be worth a trip to the vet with her to get her drained by tube as sometimes it can also remove a blockage and is less unpleasant (and risky) for the hen than tipping her. I have always been given an antibiotic also with sour crop just in case its bacterial. Sour crop tend to be a secondary symtom of something else-crop malfunction or a blockage further down. Hope this helps! Uma x
emmat
Thank you - I've booked her in for 9am tomorrow so if she's no better we can get her sorted. Poor old girl, it's probably getting near the end of the line for her, her 4 mates have all gone in the last 12 months.
