So, out of the 7 eggs I had under my broody orpington, Berta. 3 hatched on Sunday (days 21) and one on Monday (day 22). When I came back from work yesterday (days 23) I found that she had mostly abandoned the nest( she is locked in the eglu at the moment, with a feeder and drinker, so she had clearly made a decision to leave the eggs as they were pretty cold, and she is mostly sitting in the nest in there anyway.

However, the odd thing is, there we definitely still three eggs yesterday morning (day 22) and by the evening there were only two. I cracked them both open and discovered one blank eggs, and one with an embryo which, from pictures I've looked at was probably about 10 days into incubation when it died, but what about the other egg? Is there a chance that Berta might have eaten it? I took the lid off the eglu last night so I could somewhat refresh the auboise and I could not find this other egg, I could not find any sticky residue or fragments of shell to suggest she had eaten is, so I am just really perplexed!

Does anyone have any idea what can have happened? If she has eaten is, is there any chance that she did such an efficient job? And will is be ok chat she has eaten a nearly four week old egg which has been kept warm all that time?
