Henslaved
Pudding had the Suprelorin implant today. Nothing to report. Just wanted to use the forum as a marker for when she had it done and to hear anyone elses experience with it. I believe I am to expect a hard moult within a few weeks, so will be watching her like a hawk.
sandyhas3chucks
not in every case. Critical care Formula is a must in my cupboard for reduced appetite topping up, not just for real poorlies.
Henslaved
I have some Critical Care Formula in the chooks cupboard just incase. I'm hoping she doesn't go into a hard moult , she's been through enough , but she seems to be taking it all in her stride bless her.
sandyhas3chucks
At least it is not bloomin freezing if she does.... Lets hope she doesn't...
Egghead68
How's she doing?
Henslaved
She seems to be doing ok so far regarding the implant no eggs . Although her crop problem is beginning to worry me a little, it's just not emptying nowhere near as fast as it should. Which means she is hungry all the time and is losing weight . (Sometimes it must be that full, when she bends down she is sick and the others peck at it ) Am going to starve her for 24 hrs and see if it goes down on its own without me having to empty it, and then give her small amounts of yoghurt laced with CCF and lifeguard. I need to get some weight on her. There's always something with this girl .
sandyhas3chucks
try some maggots. Has your vet felt inside her oviduct to see if there is egg/shell/or lash in there bunging her up ? Mine regularly has to get them out. Have you weighed her... it is a good idea cos you can see exactly how much she loses and hopefully then gains.. Egghead68
Hope you can get her sorted.
Henslaved
Think Pudding maybe starting to moult. Picked her up yesterday to check her over and a big clump of feathers fell out . There have also been a few blowing around the run. Hope it won't turn into a full blown moult . Her crop isn't as full as usual either, so am assuming the moult is bringing on a loss of appetite too. Out with the CCF and Lifeguard . On the positive side, where the vet pulled out her feathers when she had her op, they're coming through nicely . sandyhas3chucks
she wont be wanting/needing to eat as much without needing nutition for the egg making either. good luck Pudding
Egghead68
She might feel out of sorts for a few days. Hope she does OK.
Henslaved
It has turned onto a full blown moult . There are lots of her feathers in the run every day, but she seems to be taking it all in her stride. Caught Rosie plucking one of Puddings new feathers from where she had the op though yesterday so Pudding got a good few squirts of anti peck spray. Egghead68
Good she's coping all right with it. One of mine is moulting quite heavily at the moment after her third implant and I am considering giving her critical care formula.
Henslaved
Just an update. No eggs . She's not losing anymore feathers and the new ones are coming through nicely . She is not eating as much as I would like and seems very timid around the other girls for some reason (secret bullying perhaps).

Egghead68
They do eat less if they are not laying (sorry to state the obvious). One of mine got more timid on the implant too (the other didn't). I think they regress a bit to being like a younger hen. Glad she is doing well. You will need to keep an eye out for when she starts crouching again (can be anything from 5 weeks to 6 months after the implant. One of mine is crouching 8 weeks after a double-strength implant grrrr) and get her reimplanted within a few days of that.
Henslaved
It's been 6 months since Pudding had her implant . It has done the job I wanted it to do so far . Don't know if it's anything to do with the implant, but she is the most feathered chook I have ever known . It's difficult to see her skin when checking for critters. She is also my heaviest chook now and has put on plenty of weight . Here she is and with her friends, a lovely view of her rump Am on the look out now for when she starts crouching again . Egghead68
So pleased she is doing well. She is a lovely hen. If you start to notice any changes in behaviour, e.g. More interested in food, you might prefer to get her reimplanted then rather than wait till she's crouching. I am now doing this as I find it means they don't moult at all (mine sometimes have a mini-moult and a couple of days of lethargy if I wait for them to crouch). For info mine seem to be totally fine on suprelorin long-term. My ginger hybrid must be on about her 9th implant! Both are also well feathered and a good weight. I presume this is because the protein and energy go into them rather than the eggs.

Henslaved
Went to pick her up for her weekly health check, she crouched , that was on the 26th January. Another implant done on the 28th of January. Hoping this one will last another eight months . She has lost a few feathers today, not many though. Still perky and looks well .
