Egghead68
Since Friday Mrs P has stopped sitting on the top perch, has had diarrheoa and now extremely lethargic, sleeping most of the time with her head tucked into her feathers. Her face seems very pale one minute and very dark the next. When she does mix with the others she "fakes wellness" by pretending to forage. She was semi-broody last weekend and initially I put her lethargy and poor appetite down to hormones but I now think she's properly ill. I sent a poo sample to Retfords on Thursady. Her weight is normal (1kg). Her rectal temperature is 42.2, which I think might be a bit high (she feels hot). I have tried isolating her but she gets distressed and wants to be with the others. I am giving her nutridrops and Avipro. She is eating quite a lot of grapes and sweetcorn but not much else. Any suggestions? I can't easily get her to a chicken vet before Thursday. lillybettybabs
I had some sort of bug in my flock 4 or 5 months ago with similar symptoms but also their crops were fluid filled. I culled one as she was old and suffering far to much but the rest recovered with some antibiotics. Id easy off the grapes and sweetcorn and make a syringable solution of her pellets and some probiotic powder ( i use Poultry Answer). If you don't have a syringe, droppers are good and i have used a outer of a biro pen before, sucking the solution half way, putting finger over top and releasing some droplets in the hens mouth to swallow. Hope that helps a little.

lillybettybabs
Tylan, I think he thought it may have been Mycoplasmosis.
Egghead68
Thanks. That is possible, I guess. She is a carrier of myco and has been under stress from the dreadful weather and Jubilee fireworks. She doesn't have obvious respiratory symptoms though. Egghead68
I think you are right about the mycoplasma. She is standing around with her eyes closed a lot, scratching her eyes and her joints are creaky. Trying to get Tylan 200 injections for her from the vet. Does anyone know whether I should try to isolate her (which is causing her lots of stress and is likely to make the mycoplasma worse) or continue to let her mix with my other two, who in theory have been vaccinated against mycoplasma? lillybettybabs
I isolated mine as they seem to go down with it one at a time, Mine are chilled out hens so i wouldn't know if it will make yours worse or not. Mine didn't show any signs of respiratory problem either i wounder if they don't always have to have all the symptoms.
Egghead68
Thanks. I have isolated mine now and trying to get vet's appointment for tomorrow. The other two seem well but have diarrheoa, so I'm going to ask for Tylan for them too. Fingers crossed and thanks again for your help. Glad most of yours made a good recovery. Redwing
Have you checked them for mites? mites can cause scratching of the face and quietness
Egghead68
Thanks Redwing. I did check for mites and they had routine ivermectin a few weeks ago. Mrs P has started wheezing now so I think it probably is myco. It is a huge operational challenge getting her to the vet's today but I will do it somehow! Egghead68
Thanks. Vet agreed it was myco and she has had her first Tylan injection. Fingers crossed for her.
Egghead68
Mrs P has been prescribed 3 novotyl ea injections at 3 day intervals and the others have tylan in their drinking water. Mrs P seems quite a bit better - hope this continues when she is off the tylan. I have a new question. The sample I sent to Retfords has come back positive for Candida which obviously the Tylan will make worse. Does anyone know if it safe/advisable to give Nystan at the same time as antibiotics, please?
Egghead68
From a search of previous posts looks like it is OK to give Nystan and antibiotics together.
