Eating paper and bedding

Recommended Posts

My 4 1/2 year old pekin is currently in isolation indoors recovering from mycoplasma and associated infections. She has started shredding the newspaper on the floor and eating it and is eating her aubiose bedding (she is eating food and grit too). Does anyone know if (a) this will do any harm and (b) whether it is just boredom or indicates some sort of deficiency or something? I will replace the newspaper with old towels tomorrow.

Could be boredom or frustration.

My Rosie did it when I put newspaper over the broody cage to stop the others from pooping on the broody. I think she did it because she thought the broody had treats in her bowl. Didn't do her any harm though I wouldn't want her making a habit of it.

Thanks for asking. She spent her first day outside today and seems very lively. She has eaten so much bedding she is a bit cropbound, though and I can't get maggots into her as the antibiotics have put her off her food. Also can't get meds into her as too wriggly and I am worried they will go in her airway. Fingers crossed she doesn't need them any more. Hope your girls are doing OK

I think it was because the antibiotic she was on (septrin) causes high potassium levels and nausea. When she was outside she just filled her crop with grit rather than food. I gave her some calcium (crushed up egg shells) and took all the bedding, grit and paper away for a couple of days. I stopped the septrin after 3 days too because she also developed a black rash. She seems fine now and is back to her usual bossy self!
