suehiggi
Hello. Day nineteen today and one of the three eggs Nell is sitting on is moving! This is our first hatch and we are very excited. My question is Nell is sitting on her eggs with straw around her. The nest box is a very slippy plastic and the eggs are against it at the bottom. I have got some wood shavings. Should I put some under the eggs and take the straw away? Have read about chicks damaging their legs if the floor is slippy. I could do it when I lift Nell off to feed( she doesn't leave her eggs to eat or drink otherwise). Would the straw hurt the chicks? Nell is a pekin bantam sitting on some pekin bantam eggs. Also I have read you can put j cloths down on the floor is this a good idea? Nell is nesting in the shower inside- long story- so the floor is slippy too. Thank you for any advice you can give. Redwing
At this stage you run the risk of putting her off, the eggs will hatch the same on the nestbox floor. Once the chicks have all hatched I would clear out the bedding as a matter of routine and then whatever clean bedding you add is your choice
sjp
as Redwing says I leave them alone untill the last chick is about 24hrs old then I prefere to use wood shavings for chicks it's nice and soft but also makes a nice level surface for them and they can use it as a dust bath as well
