catsu
More questions on my first attempt with a broody! Thanks in advance for any advice, tips etc... Day 21 was last Monday-ish. And one chick arrived last Sunday. There are still some eggs under mum, and she's still sitting tight. Should I remove the eggs now so as to start mum to teach the little chick what to do etc? He/she looks like its wants to explore the world and looks v bored stuck next to its sitting mum. Also mum is very aggressive, any tips on how to encourage her to get off the nest without loosing a finger? Or the little chick getting stamped on? I'm not sure I'm brave enough to move her even with gloves on. She's really fiesty!! Any other tips?
chuckmum6
Have you listened to the other eggs? Can you hear them moving or peeping if not I would probably take them away and let mum get on with her baby, you could give it another day, but not much longer. sjp
if you have on lock down then in the morning on the pop hole door and put the feeder and drinker out in the run but if she's still sitting tight after an hour or so then you need to either remove her from the nest into the run then remove the eggs or remove the eggs from under her which if shes unhandleable is the safest option either way your best to wear a pair of gloves and long sleaves
dance in the dark
Are the hens all one breed and are all the eggs about the same size? If one has hatched from a smaller egg it may have just come quicker. I would make sure there is food and waterin reach for the mum and she can show the chick from there. She clearly still thinks some eggs might hatch, and it is getting a bit late now, but it's not impossible, although the chick may be wanting to explore the world it will be fine as it can be with mum, eat, and drink, for a few days. She will move herself when she is satisfied no more will hatch, she will respond to the chicks demands to go outside, etc, and get off the nest herself. If you move her, and discover a load of eggs that we on the verge of hatching you will kick yourself, because if you mess with the humidity just before hatching, they will never make it out! catsu
Thanks for all the good advice. Managed to pull the last of the eggs out from under Mum, think they were DIS and maybe that's why she was a bit more determined to stay put. Now all the eggs have gone she's up and about. I'm happy with just one chick as its my first time with chicks. No doubt this will be a learning curve with many more questions! Thank you all very much! I have posted pics of the chick on my other thread to see if anyone is up for guessing the sex I'm obviously hoping for a hen
