Smart Feeder - Light sensor values

Just saw all five girls very excitedly milling round their dust bath in their run (and this is their FR time too!)

 

Went to see what was so interesting and they were pecking/bothering a poor bedraggled bee

 

Rescued the bee and they weren't happy that I'd shooed them off! Do chooks normally try to eat bees/wasps or do they have the sense/instinct not to and mine just haven't learnt yet? Worried about them getting stung

 

Grateful for your thoughts ?

I can't say I've ever had a hen with a bee sting (and hope I don't). Perhaps they don't get stung. I can imagine their pecky beaks might kill any bee or wasp before it got into the soft part of their mouths.

I keep bees, and the hens have never shown any interest in them, nor have the bees bothered them.

Thanks for the reassurance folks. Maybe it was their natural curiosity that made them investigate. They're interested in everything at the moment, because of their young age perhaps ? (approx 9-14weeks).

I watched Bella eat a bumble bee once. She minced it into little pieces before eating. Not something I wish to see again - the bee population needs all the help it can get without my hooligans snacking on them

Hooligans I like that. Gosh clever hen. They do need all the help and glad I managed to rescue this one !
