Lorri-d
Went to let the girls out this morning and my silkie is really poorly she is laying almost motionless with her eyes shut and barely moves when you pick her up. I have removed her from the others and bought her inside but is there anything else I can do? She wont open her beak to drink or eat and I cant get her to open her eyes so it's not looking good She was fine yesterday, eating and drinking. She was maybe a little subdued but they have only been in with the 'big girls' since the weekend so I just presumed she was a bit unhappy having been moved to her new home. She wasnt being picked on and the younger ones were accepted quite easily. I've looked her over for injuries but cant see anything. Is there anything I can do? Mrs_B
I don't know enough to give advise on what's going on, but as jrsankanu has said, I would take her to the vet to make sure. Do you have any plastic disposable syringes? My instinct would be to put some water in one and try to put it into her beak so she has some water. If this is wrong, please someone correct me. Good luck x
jrsankanu
That's what I resorted to with maisy I used my finger to drop water into her mouth to keep her fluids up will keep fingers crossed for you x
Lorri-d
I rang the vet first thing who wasn't very encouraging. I think he would have put her down if the journey hadn't finished her off So I've been given her drops of water all day and she is now sitting up and has her eyes open. Not out of the woods yet but I'll be more hopeful if she lasts the night. Keep everything crossed for me
jrsankanu
Some vets are horrible they Don't seem to understand the meaning of the word pet I would like to suggest try another vet I've seen 3 different ones I am now happy with the lady I saw last. Is her crop large in the morning or does her breath smell of bad egg ?

Definitely try a different vet if you can, seeing one who understands may be worth that extra journey x
Lorri-d
Hi, yes I think I'll have to look around for another vet. I haven't noticed a large drop or smelly breath.

jrsankanu
If u do it's possible she's eaten something she shouldn't like mine did ,I kept dropping fluids but I decided that if she had swallowed something and it was stuck I had try and get it out by rubbing her crop she was sick each time eventually after a few days I mastered the technique of holding her over the toilet and making her sick few bits of long grass later a broken red elastic band came out and she recovered ( vet had given up which is why I carried on ! ) let me know how she goes 18 mths ok hens and I'll never look back they're my babies. Chucky Mama
I would be a little concerned about Mareks disease which has a poor prognosis.
Lorri-d
Have just been reading about mareks She is very wobbly on her legs, although considering she didn't move this morning it is an improvement. If it is mareks do I need to do anything with regard to the other girls. This young one was one of 3 and all 3 were moved in with my 2 adult hens on Sunday. What would you suggest? Chucky Mama
You will have to isolate the bird that is suspect and keep a close eye on the others. I would remove all bedding and give the housing, run etc and really good clean keeping the others away from dust etc during this process. If it is Marek's I am afraid that there is no cure The Morbidity rate is 10-50% (that is the percentage of birds that will come down with the disease if exposed) and mortality up to 100% (the percentage of birds that die as a result of infection). Lorri-d
Hi, thanks for your reply. She is indoors now on her own. If she recovers will she ever be able to go back with the others? Are the older hens at as much risk as the younger ones? Will give everything a good clean today! Sorry just re-read you post. So if it is mareks she won't recover? Chucky Mama
The older hens may have a degree of immunity, silkies are more prone as a breed. If she has Marek's she wont survive, don't prolong things if she is not showing any signs of improvement soon. Sorry to be so negative, good luck

Chucky Mama
Sorry to hear that she has gone. I would proceed with the view that it was Marek's. Fingers crossed that none of your other have it/get it
