Bizarre Broody Behaviour

Recommended Posts

Good morning,

I have 3 hens, one of which seems to always have a tendency to go broody. She was broody for 6 weeks or so in the spring before finally we constructed a broody cage, and after a few days in there, she was cured. At least temporarily.

She went broody again 2 days ago, starting clucking in a different 'voice' and always wanted to go to her nest box if given the opportunity. So yesterday I put her back in the broody cage in the hope to catch the broodiness in the early stages and to help prevent contagion to her 2 sisters, however this morning I went outside and found she had laid an egg sometime between 8pm last night and 6am this morning on the floor of the cage. She was still making a broody sound, and her comb was definitely more pink than red. All signs point to her being broody, but if she laid an egg then I guess she isn't? I feel a little guilty at making her lay an egg in the discomfort of the broody cage. After seeing that she laid an egg I let her back in the run with the other 2 chickens but after leaving the house early this morning have not had opportunity to see whether she's gone back in to the nest box to continue being broody.

Is there something I am missing here or is this all not adding up?

Any help or advice welcome!

Tom

We have one out of our four that always goes broody and she seems to start her next broody session a day or two before she stops laying.

She's just stopped being broody again after a week of spending her day times in the sin bin.

At the beginning of this broody spell we also decided to try and nip it in the bud at the first early signs so as soon as she looked broody we put her in there - came home that evening and she was pacing back and forth. Let her out to FR with the other 3 but shut the pophole of the house - she was going mental trying to find a way in but I ignored her. Went out a little later and she'd layed an egg on the grass under the overhang of the nestbox and was sitting tight on that instead. :D why she hadn't layed it in the sin bin I have no idea, she must have crossed her legs all day in the hope we'd let her in the proper place.

My pekin is broody at the moment, and laid 2 days in to being broody. We weren't sure what was happening, but after posting on here about her strange behaviour others have reassured me that they do often lay a few days into being broody. Good luck with your girl!

i agree with the others here, i'm sure the egg was already on its way when she'd gone broody. i have a brahma who always seems to be going broody and i always incarcerate her in the broody cage, but she still takes over a week to snap out of it!
