how long would it take for symptoms to develop

Recommended Posts

Had an awful experience on saturday, came home from work to find one of the girls had got a loose bit of thread from the weedproof membrane and swallowed it...but still with the end attached to the main membrane. Tried to pull it free but was unable to, so cut her free and took her to the vet.

Vet said there wasn't much he could do as she had by then swallowed the whole thing and to keep an eye on her.

Now 5 days later and she seems happy enough, eating, drinking and wandering around with the others. My question is if the thread has got caught up inside (not seen it in any poos and no idea how long a bit she has swallowed) how long would it take for signs and symptoms to develop? Vet led me to believe that I would know within 24h, but don't want to relax too soon.

Thanks

It could take a while as it could sit in the crop quite happily until it gets caught up with other food or moves into a position where it could cause a blockage. I would try not to worry too much. You will know if and when it becomes an issue. There is no saying that it will cause any problem. It might be worth having a gentle feel of her crop when it is empty to see if it is in there.

One of my girls swallowed a piece of silicone sealant from around a window, probably thought it was a worm, and after a spell of being very poorly and an expensive visit to the vet who prescribed a medicine to move the blockage, she eventually pooed it out!

I would think if your Girl is showing no signs of illness she will probably be ok.

Keep an eye on her poos!

A worry aren't they!
