jellyb100
Those of you who read my previous post about our fox attack know that we were going to replace Mavis this weekend. We now have a new Amber Star called Penelope (penny). We were worried about introducing them and it hasn't been very nice so far. We were expecting a scuffle and it's such a shame as we had basically no problems when we first got them all. We wondered about introducing them slowly but decided that it's going to have to happen and some point so best to let them get on with it. Frankie went for her and cut her just above her beak straight away and has had another go at her. That was about an hour ago and now Frankie and Doris are either sitting in the run or just outside, and Penny is hiding round the other side from them. They all seem very calm out there now but are very much keepijng away from each other. I have put a box on it's side out there, some seperate food (which she has eaten some of) and water (not touched). I am quite concerned about what's going to happen when i'm at work tomorrow! I'm working from home in the afternoon, but there's a whole morning of pecking to get through!
theherd123
Oh dear it does sound as if Penny is having a rough time doesnt it? The best thing is to leave them to it - this is very hard to do and one i struggled with a lot when i introduced my two sets of girls - its so awful to watch Do you have any antipeck spray? This can work well but personally i have now used bumper bits on my girls and they work so well. You can get them from the Wernlas Collection. I do hope things settle down with your girls soon. harveypup
It is horrible introducing a new girl to an established pair It will get easier though I promise The main thing to remember is to keep some food and water where she can get to it, I also used to spend a bit of quality time with our new girl too where she got some extra treats. Maybe you could shut one of the old ones in the run and let the other two free range for an hour or so and then swap them over... this may help to braek the existing bonds and help them all to be good friends. Good luck, let us know how you go on
jellyb100
Just got back from the shops to find that OH has had to shut Frankie in the run to give Penny a break. She's still hiding in the corner but at least she isn't being harrassed. Frankie has a small white feather hanging from her beak. We'll swap them over in a bit. I'm now lookin ginto anti peck stuff! Hen Watch
Hi. I put a new Amber Star in with my 3 Omlet girls. Pecking, feather pulling ensued. I was a wimp and wouldn't let them fight it out (I know it's probably quicker if you do) but I put my new one in the childrens wendy house and the others in the eglu/run whilst I was at work in the day. Then they free ranged together when I was home. I put her in through the eggport to sleep together each night.
jellyb100
I put them in together when it started getting dark. Frankie chased her up and down for ages then seemed to ignore her. She spent quite a while by herself in the eglu but when I went to check on tghem she was in th ecorner by the glug and couldn't see any fighting. They are tucked up all cosy next to each other now which seems crazy considering it will probably start again tomorrow! I have nowhere else to put her so I just have to stick it out... jellyb100
Things seem a little better . They were all out in the run when I got home from work and Penny only got a little peck on the back when I let them out. She has been keeping away from them mostly but if their pecking has brought them together it has mostly been ok - just some squaring up to her if anything! It would be lovely if that was it...but I wont catch my chickens just yet!
Guest
We are having simliar problems, so I sympathise We bought 3 new girls at the end of May We kept them in the eglu for a while, they were very small and the big girls went in the cube We have recently let them free range together. Unfortunately this brought the unexpected problem of the smaller ones preferring the Cube. So there has been some jealousy from the big girls trying to keep them out The first night we moved the small ones out of the cube and put them back in the eglu The next night they went in the cube again, we tried putting the big girls in first and locking the cube, but the small ones climbed on top So now we just leave them to it, we just feel cruel as the smaller ones have tried going to bed early and then the big ones throw them out, they have tried waiting till the big girls go first but they still get thrown out They do eventually all cuddle up together and look really contented with each other I'm sure they will all get along in the end
jellyb100
Just thought i'd let you know that pecking order is all sorted and I havn't seen any pecking for a couple of days now. Penny has settled in nicely and is a very calm chook. Frankie still tries to assert herself...especially when it comes to corn. I think she might turn into a corn on the cob soon.
