Diagnosis - sick hen? *sad update*

Recommended Posts

Hello fellow chicken peeps,

One of my girls is very under the weather. She had already stopped laying a month or two back as she is moulting and she continues to do so with lots of new feathers coming through.

In the last couple of days she has completely gone off her food and today her crop is completely empty not even taking water. She sits listlessly on the nest but she is still bright eyed enough to eat grapes and mealworms.

Her rear end has some residual poo that looks white/creamy but that is it. The only other thing of note which also happened a few months ago when she got sour crop, her comb has a purple tinge to its edges.

It is proving a difficult diagnosis with no signs of airway problems either...

I have put some vitamins in her water and brought her inside for observation. She was wormed a couple of months ago.

Any advice or ideas???

I'd get her to a vet.

My columbine stopped laying after one of my girls died, I thought it was just her mourning her mate, then she's had a partial moult and has been really not herself. She then started sneezing and getting a bit snotty, stupid me thought it was due to the ever changing weather, and so put some acv in the water and limestone flour in the feed as advised.

I then decided to get her to the vet and she has been on Tylan soluble (antibiotics) for a wk because of suspected mycoplasmosis and she is definitely improving, her appetite is up, her attitude is quite fiery again and although she isn't laying I am just happy to be getting my hen back to herself again.

Have you got any nutridrops that you could give her just as a little pick me up?

:( oh no I'm so sorry to hear that she passed away, a least you were able to be with her.

I've just re read you original post and noticed you mentioned a purplish edge to the comb, this apparently is due to heart problems so that could have been the cause. :(

Big hugs to you

Xx
