Adams Egg

Moulting Mother!

Recommended Posts

As we didn't go away this summer and one of our three year old hens ( of no particular breed) went broody she was given some eggs to sit on as a "project" for the summer. We now have 3, 2 week old chicks who have been outside with the mother since day 1 and are growing quickly though I suspect that at least 2 are boys.

The mother has now started to moult and was wondering if this is usual and if there is anything she can have that wont affect the chicks. All are happily eating chick crumb at the moment .

An unintended consequence though is a cube has appeared  and a WIR is on order :shh:

Yep, perfectly normal. Broodys normally lose a good few feathers in the weeks after the hatch. I don't know why, but I thought it might be that they so of get some additional feathers when brooding. That may be a bit of a stupid thing to say, but it makes sense to me.

Either way, don't worry, keep her on chick crumb, it'll all be fine.
