My girls never seem to be ill one at a time! - Sad Update

Recommended Posts

Still treating Blanche for her unknown illness and now it looks like Alice has crop problems again :( .

Found her looking really miserable this morning and I could see her crop looked slightly enlarged, I could feel the corn she had yesterday sitting in the bottom and a small build up of fluid. Hopefully I've caught it really early as she had a bad bout earlier in the year which we were surprised she survived. At the moment there doesn't appear to be enough fluid to drain off so i don't know whether the corn will eventually go if she stays on fluids only or whether there will be a build up in the crop overnight which can be drained off.

Will just have to keep a close eye on her.

Sorry you are having such a bad time. Have you tried her on white maggots? As I'm sure you will know she will probably need antifungal treatment if it has gone sour.

Must admit I have never tried the maggots, assume there will be a bait place somewhere near here selling them, although I find maggots really repulsive think OH would have to deal with them.

Unfortunately Alice had to be PTS yesterday.

Her crop cleared itself over Saturday but she was reluctant to eat or drink, she mostly sat on the ground watching all the goings on between the other girls and watching OH building a new compost bin. Sunday she was the same but got up and ran for some cucumber. But yesterday she didn't want to get up, I had to go out and when I came back she was laying in the run looking very purple, I brought her indoors and got a vets appointment for her almost straight away as I was concerned she was suffering.

The vet said her heart was giving up and we decided to help her on her way, she was one of my first girls and I felt a fool crying in the vets but they were very kind and said what beautiful condition she was in so I know there was nothing else I could have done for her. She was fine on Friday and still laid three times a week I'm really going to miss her.

Now I have a dilemma as she lived with Carol in the Eglu, the young girls live in the Solway and I had moved Edith in with them as Alice and Carol were feather pluckers and had stripped poor Edith's neck and bum. I don't know whether Carol will be okay on her own, she is right next to the other girls and can see them all day but not mix with them, I am reluctant to move Edith back with her to lose her feathers all over again.

Guess I will just have to see how she gets on.

RIP Alice

Sorry to hear about poor Alice, but she obviously had a lovely life with you and you did everything you could for her.

As for Carol, I would suggest that you leave her on her own for a few days, then gradually reintroduce her to the others. She may not be as aggressive as before, having been removed from the pecking order and without her partner in crime.
