BadGardener
I'm getting some new hens soon. With my last lot, which were two Gingernut Rangers and a Light Sussex, I was perpetually confused as to who had laid which egg. If I get a Cream Legbar and a White Star they should be clear enough, but I also rather fancy a Miss Pepperpot and a Speckledy (both for the pretty feathers) and I see they both have Maran ancestry, so are they both going to lay me darkish brown eggs? Or will I be able to tell the difference?
Minnie&Moose
We used to have both a Pepperpot and a Speckledy and we could always tell their eggs apart. The Speckeldy laid much darker brown, shiny eggs compared with the Pepperpot, who laid a much lighter brown egg than our Gingernut did. So, if ours were anything to go by then yes, you'll be able to tell them apart.
BadGardener
Thanks very much, Minnie&Moose. Getting very excited about my colourful egg selection now!
hopingforchickens
Just a warning, not all Speckledys lay dark eggs, mine are verging on white, they are such a pale brown, apparently it's about a 80/20 split. Good luck though, I picked my chickens mainly for egg colour but it didn't quite work out as I'd hoped
