Can I sell these eggs yet?

Recommended Posts

My three new girls who I collected yesterday all laid today. The eggs are quite small compared to my older girls' eggs, but I was just wondering if it is ok to sell these at the door yet, or do I need to wait for the girls to mature a bit more first?

One of the new girls laid yesterday after I got them home - of course I just had to eat the egg :!: Apart from being quite small, the yolk was quite pale yellow compared to the bright orange of the older girls' eggs. Presumably this paleness was due to their previous diet and the yolks will change to the same as the others' colour soon enough?

Im really looking forward to be able to sell our eggs at the doorstep - is it too soon?

I don't see why not - eggs are eggs, you can get very small ones sometimes which don't have a yolk but they are usually really tiny. The yolk colour is influenced by what they eat, lots of greens will give them the nice deep orange yolks that most of us are used to getting.

I don't think there are any serious reasons though personally I'd wait until the yolks yellowed up a bit, in case people buy them, assume they're poor quality because of the pale yolks, then don't buy from you again. I don't think people mind about the size (and they can see that before they buy, anyway) but people associate yolk colour with quality and happy hens.
