The Dogmother
Agree with the height thing Major - at 5'1" I forbade my builder/joiner from putting anything where I couldn't reach it.
majorbloodnock
Agree with the height thing Major - at 5'1" I forbade my builder/joiner from putting anything where I couldn't reach it. ....whereas I, at 6', found it much more comfortabe when I raised the surfaces by a couple of inches. I reckon you'd hate cooking in my kitchen, and I'm sure I'd get backache in yours.
The Dogmother
probably! I have to supervise Phil if he's doing any DIY for me as he's a shade under 6' and gets a bit carried away.
Olly
Why do kitchens still seem to come at a 'standard' height when those using them vary so much? Was it set in the days when they assumed that women would be the principal users of the kitchen? I had an Ikea kitchen and the pull-out wire shelves were fabulous - nothing ever got 'lost' at the back of the cupboard. I have double cupboards in this kitchen, with no central divider, and so I can't fit those shelves - it is, as The Major says, a bugbear which becomes a real annoyance. majorbloodnock
You're probably right, Olly; the assumption is that women will be the principal users, yet it seems designers are almost exclusively from the presumably male contingent who don't cook. Loads of good theories that are impractical in use (door decoration that looks great, but is impossible to clean properly, for instance). The Dogmother
Don't get me started the designer from Wickes was a great help with layout, but I had to fight to get what I wanted in some areas. He really didn't understand that I didn't want downlighters, under cupboard lighting, sparkly worktops and a TV!
majorbloodnock
Yes, we haven't had a telly for 20 years or so, but even if we were to change our minds I can't comprehend wanting one in the kitchen (or bedroom, for that matter). However, I do like my strip lighting under the cupboard above the work surface, since I like to prepare food in plenty of light without any shadows. However, since I built it all, I was able to make sure there was enough of a lip to ensure my eyes were shielded from the strip lights directly. All goes to show the importance of fitting your kitchen to your own individual needs and (I agree) ignoring salespeople.
