Question about antibiotics

Recommended Posts

As I've probably got to take Mrs Beaky to the vets tomorrow for the same illness that Betty has just had (rattly/bubbly chest), I'm thinking that there is the possibility now that all five girls might end up catching whatever it is and needing to go to the vets for the same treatment. I was just wondering whether there are not antibiotics I could give them at home rather than having to pay out almost £40 per bird for a course of two injections at the vets. (I don't even want to think about the total amount if that happens).

I'm not sure what it is the vets have injected Betty with and if I am going back to the vets tomorrow, I can always ask, but I just wondered if there antibiotics I could give them myself? or am I heading down a dangerous path (not having a clue what I am talking about)?

When you take Mrs Beaky make sure you explain about Betty - as it seems that the infection has spread then there is an obvious danger that the whole flock is at risk and so should be treated. I expect the vet gave Betty an injection as its the fastest acting form of giving meds, the other options are individually by syringe (so you know each bird gets the correct dose) or by putting something in the water (I'm less keen on this as you don't know if every bird gets enough, but it is a common way of treating). The water method you can obviously do yourself, the syringe you can do yourself if you are confident enough (its easier with 2 of you) and some vets will show you how to administer an injection if you are confident (its not difficult, but not all vets are keen for amateurs to do it as there is a risk).
