Could this have been a lash?

Recommended Posts

When I went to put the girls to bed tonight, I noticed Bessie had a very very dirty bottom, then I noticed this "stuff" dangling down from the nest box ......... :vom: It was a very strange "blobby" thing. It was sort of gloopy and then some of it looked a bit like egg yolk that had been hard boiled. I actually thought it looked a bit like a foetus :vom: but common sense told me it couldn't possibly be :!: I've checked through old posts on the forum about lashes though and it seems that they are usually more rubbery/meaty-looking, so I am a bit puzzled as to whether this would count as a lash or maybe a very strange softy :anxious::anxious::eh:

I had been wondering if she was going to lay a softy as she has been a bit odd lately (see recent previous post) and hasn't laid for about six weeks either (never been a very good layer anyway). Today she has been hanging around in the house all day, mostly standing around. I am pretty sure it was Bessie that did produce it.

I am going to have to give her a good botty bath at the weekend. Does it sound like a lash? and if so, is this a good thing or a bad thing? Does it mean that she might start laying again (although she lost a few feathers today, so maybe is coming in to moult).

Hmm, a few of our ex batts used to lay lashes from time to time. When you say it was like egg yolk, I take it that it was yellow? All of the ones that our girls have ever produced are usually the colour of egg shell rather than yellow. Hopefully someone more experienced than me can help you more :)

Thanks majuka, most of it was a sort of creamy/whitish colour of a jelly-like substance but there was a small part which more solid-looking that looked a bit like pale hard-boiled/well cooked scrambled egg yolk mixed in. Difficult to describe really and I couldn't take a photo. It was about the size of my thumb in length with a fatter bit at the top and tapering to the end. Quite squidgy though rather than meaty texture. None of the softys I have seen before have looked like this, which is why I am wondering if it was a lash.
