Smart Feeder - Light sensor values

Hi there all,

I have just watched my 2nd chick hatch and number 3 seems to have been woken up with all the cheeping! Isnt this addictive !

Due to my inexperience I am completely unprepared for these chicks as I didnt really expect them to hatch! My eggs were from a shady source, they didn't look promising upon candling, and yesterday was day 21. So I have now managed get a polystyrene box with blanket in bottom and heat lamp as a temp brooder. Will they be ok in this? I have put water in a jam jar lid, although I have read they dont actually need this yet? I havent got any chick crumb yet, but will in the morning.. do i feed this as it comes?

 

Sorry for all the questions but there are that many opinions online from all over the world, I'd be more interested in what my fellow Brits do.

Jay cloths are the better idea I prefere to use a proper chick drinker but other folk use shallow bowls a jam jar lid might not hold enough water and yes chick crumb is used as it comes either medicated or non medicated

oh yes we do like to see photos of new chicls

I have a proper drinker but I've heard they can drown in them? Chick 3 and 4 and rocking away in the incubator hopefully they will be with us soon

 

I was given the eggs and told they are RIRs and hybrids, the two chicks that have hatched are VERY different looking, markings and size! Would males be bigger at this age or not?

No the males shouldn't be bigger at this age. I would think that is that they are different breeds or hybrids. You should be able to tell the males apart by their bigger combs when they are older

Another vote for jay clothes. I use jam jar lid for the first few days I do not find it a problem as I am around and chick watching a lot so I can fill it up frequently.

 

Chick crumb you feed as it is. I fed medicated crumb but that is a whole new discussion

Well my 5 babies are thriving the last one 'born' last night is now in with her siblings

Iv set them up a new brooder which is an indoor rabbit hutch with jay cloths on the floor as recommended! They are starting to peck at their chick crumb when i 'peck' with my finger so cute!

I have but it their mini drinker, not filled it too much so there should be no accidents! The jam jar wasnt lasting 5 min between them tipping it over n pooping in it haha!
