Leopard geckos

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have one of these?

Are they easy to set up?

Do they take a lot of looking after?

Are they expensive?

Can you keep them single? Or do you need 2 or 3?

I watched a programme last night, and I'm quite interested :D

I won't be getting one yet, I will do months and months of research before I get anywhere near getting one  I'm just interested in what others know :D

Oh, and is pets at home any good for reptiles? Or should I look elsewhere for stuff?

Thank you :D

Hi there,

I haven't got geckos so can't tackle your gecko questions, but personally, if you can find any near you, I'd try to find a store that specialises in reptiles rather than go to Pets at Home. We have bearded dragons, and I find the reptile section in pets at home a little too basic. For instance, they have 'live food', but every time I've ever picked up a box of 'live food' there, the crickets in the box were everything but alive...

The more specialised shops I go to, have live crickets that tend to be alive, and feed them if they don't sell quickly enough.

In a place like Pets at Home, you can never be sure how knowledgeable the staff is either... and some are very good at giving a good talk, without proper knowledge. Of course you can be lucky and get someone who really knows their stuff and has reptiles as pets themselves, but that's not guaranteed. In a specialised shop, the staff will likely have more experience. I'm lucky as I have a store not far, and the owner is totally passionate about what he does, so if I need advice I know I can ask!

There are also breeders around, that you can look up on the internet, who again can be a good source of advice.

I'm not saying 'don't go to Pets at Home', just that you never know if you'll get the most knowledgeable advice there. I go to our own Pets at Home regularly, but usually to buy things like bowls and bird sheets and that kind of stuff, rather than for advice.

Good luck with your research :)

Thank you :D

You have confirmed what I always thought about PAH.

We have a 'little' pet shop in town, it's about 5 minutes walk from here and they have loads of reptiles in there...ill ask them :D I know it will be more expensive, but I like to support local businesses :D plus it means that I can keep going back if I get stuck

I've ordered a book from amazon that has some good reviews, wasn't expensive, but it should be a good starting point for me :D

:D I have 2 or rather the school where I work has - but I look after. Two females called Saffy ( Saffron) and Topaz - they eat live crickets ( you just need to keep these alive in the tubs - cabbage leaf/carrot)

The girls live in a heated vivarium on clacisand - fresh water everyday and fed 2-3 times a week. They don't have any lighting just heat mat under the sand and a few rocks with their hide and a fake trailing plant

Pick out poo daily - change sand totally once a year as they go to a holiday home in summer ( shop where I got them) unlike snakes they eat shed skin :vom: Check out your independant shop - if like mine the guy is an expert, no need to take to vets, you take to him or ask advice

I would get 2 females - not sure how much running cost is, but 2 tubs of crickets last me 2 weeks, veggies have at home anyway

PM me if you have any other :?: s or send me email and I can send some pics
