Carolemagic
I wonder if anyone can help me. I have been away for the weekend leaving hens with other half. They have been fine and are still laying well. However, this morning I noticed that one of them has pinkish sections on her legs as opposed to her legs being grey/yellow. She is walking fine and is trotting round as normal but I wonder if I need to do anything. She is the one I have most difficulty catching so I do not want to harass her by chasing her round till I know what it might be. Thanks. loumabel
could she be moulting? I have noticed my girls legs go a bit pink when they are moulting and they are shedding scales.
Redwing
As Loumabel says it could be shedding scales. If its pink spots these often appear as a bird reaches maturity (its more common on cockerels though!) Check out some pics of Scaley leg though just to be sure its not that
Carolemagic
I have been out to her for a while and it is down the side of both legs as though she has been irritated and scratching in the night (because she was fine yesterday when I got back and the bottom of the eglu has lots of scale debris in it). I have cleaned out the eglu and sprayed it with barrier stuff. Her feet look a bit pink/sore too though she seems as inquisitive as ever and is not limping or anything. I have been on 'scaly leg' sites and favour washing her tonight when she is sleepy and putting vaseline on her legs - does that sound right? Having said that, her legs just look as though she has been rasping at the outside edges. I wondered if it was because it has been so damp and the bars irritated her... Carole scratches head in bemusement and worry. When anything goes wrong I feel so lacking in knowledge!
