Is your eglu/cube/WIR quite near your house? I'm a recent member and chicken owner and my garden is VERY small so my eglu is always going to be quite near the house. The thing is....I'm already thinking about a WIR in the future (more maybe?) but, if they're static, am unsure about whether that would be a bad thing in the summer - flies, smells etc.

Hi I have a very small garden too so my chickens are close to my house. It's not any problem really but I do make sure their run doesn't get too smelly by changing the wood chip every so often. I would have the run in a permanent place as otherwise they will wreck your whole garden eventually and cover it with poo People who have covered runs in permanent places find that horse bedding in the run is good for stopping the smell. Hope this helps

Yes, it does, thanks. I'll need some new bedding soon so will have a look at what you recommend. I've noticed a few other people on the forum think it's good too. Just need to persuade OH to help with digging out a permanent place for them! Do you let yours FR? OH worried about the mess everywhere as it is a small space

I find woodchip on concrete to my great. My hybrids are fairly close to my back door.

Yes I let mine free range and it does get messy so I go around and pick it up with a shovel and then put it in the compost bin.

I could almost touch my WIR from my kitchen window (if my arms were twice as long ). Never had a problem with smells/flies. I use Easibed and either Stalosan F or Bio-Dry and keep the run covered.

Thanks, the photos were very helpful. It must be nice to be able to see them from the kitchen window but not sure how you ever get anything done!

 

I obviously need to invest in a compost bin now too!
