In the egg port today was a lovely big egg from Melody and a small egg too.

Up to now it has been Queenie who has been laying the little eggs. But todays little egg was slightly bigger than usual and 1/2 of the shell is streaked in blood. Now, I'm thinking it is probably Queenies egg and she didn't lay one yesterday but am worried about the blood on it - not for eating but for the health of my girls.

 

Each girly got a bottom check up and all bottoms look the same with no obvious signs of distress.

Did Queenie suffer a bit becuase the egg was bigger than usual and will she be ok or is there something else I need to be looking out for ?

Sometimes this just happens, not sure why - it can be straining to lay a big egg, but it happens with small ones too. You've done the main thing - check for signs of a prolapse. If they all look ok, I wouldn't worry - just keep an eye on things to make sure there's no injury and that nothing looks wrong.

I know now it wasn't a Queenie egg - she layed at 4.20 this afternoon

So it could be Lucie with her lovely red comb or a smallish one for now from Myrtle the wyandotte. Either way I am really pleased because I got 3 eggs today

Luvachicken, I had been told by an experienced chicken keeper, this time last year when Molly began laying that this can happen with the first egg that passes through and not to worry if it did (Molly's first egg had a streak on it) Martha's first egg last week had a very small streak on it.

 

I had an egg yesterday and another today and so think that Florence may have also started.....but can't be sure as I'm back to work now and miss all the action!!!! I now have 5 lovely eggs to eat this weekend...yummy!

Thanks mimi - it would make sense to be Lucie's egg, she is slightly younger than Queenie but has been looking ready for a little bit, and of course it would have been her first egg

I thought I would have to wait until 14th Feb but am really pleased with my two babies and their egg laying.

Yay!!! Florence did lay her first egg today!!! Up and down to the nest box and then a little blood streaked egg as well as Martha's. So 7 eggs to eat this weekend!!!!
