try putting it at chicken chin height so they have to crane their heads in to eat, that may do the trick

 

If they spill some then remove the feeder for the next day so they have to clean up what they have spilt

 

You could also put a slab or mat under the feeder area so any spillages are easy to clean up. Asda make a rectangle rubber car mat for £2 that works pretty well

I use one of those large rubber/plastic cement mixing trays from Wickes, with their feeder hung over it in the middle. It's rare they manage to flick food beyond it, so easy to keep an eye on spillages, and sweep them up. (They tend to peck up what they spill anyway, this way.)
